I am inquiring regarding if UAV's can now be utlised to conduct aerial patrols of powerlines.

Regular Powerline patrols are currently undertaken
by Power distribution utilities to identify defects on
power lines in rural & outback area
such as Faulty Insulators, Broken Wire strands
& Vegetation Infringing close to the lines.

Current aerial patrols are undertaken by regular fixed or rotary winged aircraft at approx 50knts between 50-100ft above ground level.

To conduct patrols in Australia a minimal operating range would have to be least 50km with an endurance of around 3-4 hours.

If someone could give me an indication of if a
UAV could be able to do the job.
If they have be utilised for this application.
What type
What is happings with CAA approvals to operate UAV's
capital start up costs & or lease arrangements
training costs & requirements
operating costs
Thanks
Regards
Kym
